Morlaix, Brittany, France, 8 September 1937. He was educated at George Watson’s College, Edinburgh, the Universities of Edinburgh and Marburg, and New College, London. He was ordained to the Congregational ministry in his native Scotland at Nairn (1890), and later moved to Reigate, Surrey (co-pastor 1895, pastor 1897-1903). He was Professor of New Testament Language and Patristics, United College, Bradford and Lancashire College, Manchester (1903-09), and foreign secretary of the London Missionary Society (1909-12). He was a lecturer for the National Adult School Union (1912-30), and continued to lecture in retirement.
