The Priest in the Parish ...... .............................Father Benedict Williamson, who proudly and gratefully declares that the Saint of Lisieux has been his 'light and strength through all the years' of his priesthood, is the latest English expositor of the Little Flower. We could wish that, in his long and interesting Introduction and in the preliminary chapter which follows it, he had given us a concise explanation of his plan. The two volumes consist of Father Williamson's own counsels, lavishly adorned and frequently enforced by extracts from the Saint's writings; but it is not always quite clear what is a paraphrase of St. Therese and what is Father Williamson's own. On the front page of the first volume we find, under the main title, the sub-heading, 'I—The Priesthood '; and the second volume's title page is inscribed, 'Ii– The Priesthood.' What does this mean? Are these two volumes on the Priesthood to have further instalments dealing with conventual life or with the spiritual health of those who are neither priests nor religious? It is always a good thing for an author of books like these to disclose his plan at the outset. As Father Benedict's chapters are short and are printed in exceptionally bold and clear type, these handsome little volumes (small enough for a fairsized pocket or hand-bag) are easily carried about for reading at moments which might otherwise be wasted. They have frontispieces and are strongly bound in cloth, with gilt lettering.
