A Great Gulf Fixed, Brownlow North
2 Brownlow North A Great Gulf Fixed
Banner of Truth January 1999 085151765X / 9780851517650 Soft Cover Used - Very Good
Cover is clean and in very good condition. Previous owner's name and green mark on the front inside cover. No marks or writing observed in the text. Binding is tight and square. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Divisions which are deep and wide exist both within and between nations. The greatest of these is probably that between rich and poor because it translates into the gulf between the powerful and the oppressed, the educated and the illiterate, the well-fed and well-housed and the starving of the world's shanty towns. It creates a happiness on the one hand and a misery on the other. However, there is a division which goes deeper and runs further even than this. It results from the way in which people of all ages and places relate to the Word and Kingdom of God. In terms of it, the rich may be poor and the poor, rich and while gospel riches may not obliterate the wretchedness of life below, they will not result in endless woe in the world beyond but eternal bliss. Are you really rich? Or are you really poor?

Benjamin Morgan Palmer (January 25, 1818 – May 25, 1902), an orator and Presbyterian theologian, was the first moderator of the Presbyterian Church in the Confederate States of America. As pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of New Orleans, his Thanksgiving sermon in 1860 had a great influence in leading Louisiana to join the Confederate States of America. After 1865 he was minister in the Presbyterian Church in the United States. In its obituary of Palmer, the Christian publication The Interior reflected as follows: Dr. Palmer served God and his generation as a symbol of the immutability of the great essentials of our religion. His faithful witness to Jesus Christ in the word of his preaching and the example of his ministry gave him such power in New Orleans as few of the Lord's ambassadors have ever wielded in any age of the church. By all consent he was acknowledged for years to be the most influential man in that city, and he was so brave and outspoken that he made for righteousness not only in the private lives of men but in the civic life of the community.

Asahel Nettleton: Sermons from the Second Great Awakening, Asahel Nettleton
10 Asahel Nettleton Asahel Nettleton: Sermons from the Second Great Awakening
International Outreach, Incorporated May 1995 0964180332 / 9780964180338 Hardcover Used - Very Good Very Good
Previous owner's name and green mark on inside front cover. No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. DJ is VG. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Asahel Nettleton was born in Killingsworth, Connecticut on April 21, 1783. In the fall of 1800 the awareness of his lost condition came upon him with frightening reality. He diligently applied himself to the means of grace, often praying for hours. After 10 months of spiritual agony, God miraculously changed his heart. Following his graduation from Yale College he began serving as an itinerant evangelist in 1812. The Lord mightily blessed his labors and over the next ten years he immersed himself in a rigorous preaching schedule which saw revival break out almost everywhere he went. In October of 1822 he contracted typhus fever and his health broke. In the period of his convalescence he compiled a hymnal, Village Hymns for Social Worship. Nettleton opposed the “New Measures” introduced by Charles Finney and others and spoke almost prophetically about the consequences of churches adopting these measures. It is estimated that over 30,000 people were genuinely converted through his ministry. Asahel Nettleton died in May of 1844 after a lengthy period of illness. Some sermons from the over 50 included in this book are: 1.) Professing Christians, Awake! (Romans 13:11) -- 2.) The Contemplation of Death (Deuteronomy 32:29) -- 3.) Indecision in Religion (I Kings 18:21) -- 4.) The Death of the Righteous (Numbers 23:10) -- 5.) The Destruction of Hardened Sinners (Proverbs 29:1) -- 6.) Rejoice Young Man (Ecclesiastes 11:9) -- 7.) Seek Ye the Lord (Isaiah 55:6) -- 8.) Genuine Repentance Does Not Precede Regeneration (Jeremiah 31:19) Discerning Between the Righteous and the Wicked (Malachi 3:18) -- 9.) The Unclean Spirit (Matthew 12:43-45) -- 10.) Abandoned by God (Matthew 13:58) -- 11.) The Wise and the Foolish Virgins (Matthew 25:2) -- 12.) The Demands of Discipleship (Luke 9:57-62) -- 13.) Many Now on the Earth Are Greater Sinners Than Those Who Are in Hell (Luke 13:1-6) -- 14.) The Certain Destruction of All Who Do Not Seek Salvation Rightly (Luke 13:24) -- 15.) Ziff Davis Pub January 1944 B000PGXAVK Hardcover Used - Good No Jacket
Shows some signs of wear. CLEAN in text. ex-library with few usual marks. Front hinge is cracked. No DJ. Includes sermon by Fulton Sheed on the Resurrection. .......................... Whether or not the fifty-two sermons published in this volume are the ''best sermons'' of 1944, they certainly represent the preaching of most of the acknowledged religious leaders of our day. They are broadly representative church leaders, too, for while most of them are American, there are included representatives of the British and Continental pulpit, while the sermon of one Chinese preacher adds a touch, but just a touch, of ecumenicity to the volume. Eleven of the sermons are by Roman Catholic leaders, five by prominent Jewish rabbis. The rest are by Protestant preachers broadly representative of the various denominations. Ministers who wish to know what their prominent colleagues are preaching about and how, laymen who wish to study the trends of contemporary preaching, and others who like to read sermons will be glad to have this volume.
