'An easy reading, this manual sets apart from the survival books/manuals crowd because separates the different survival techniques in separate chapters depending on the environment (tropical jungle in one chapter, desert in another), so you need only to read the chapter of the weather/environment you pretend to go. Other books are arranged in a way that 'obtaining water' is a whole chapter of its own, other for setting a camp, obtaining food or first aid, so you'll need to read the entire book to get the survival knowledge no matter the environtment you're going. I like this book.' -- Joselo Barahona

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine what would happen if you became ill and couldn't work, or if an earthquake or hurricane or bomb left your community devastated. It happens all the time. When unexpected disasters happen, people who are even a little prepared are much better off than those who have taken their dependence on outside resources for granted. When you imagine the security of not having to worry about going to the store for even a few weeks, a comprehensive storage system begins to make sense. Now in its 11th edition, is one of the best-known preparedness bibles around. Stevens lays out a yearlong storage program of 15 food and nonfood categories, six of which (water, wheat and grains, dairy products, sweeteners, 'cooking catalysts' like salt and oil, and sprouting seeds) are capable of sustaining life indefinitely in a no-frills diet. The other 9 categories are designated 'Building Blocks,' and improve upon the basic diet and support a more routine, less Spartan existence while relying on stored supplies

5 Dolly Freed; Foreword-David Gates Possum Living: How to Live Well Without a Job and with (Almost) No Money
Tin House Books 2010 0982053932 / 9780982053935 Soft Cover Used - Very Good
Revised Edition - Cover is clean and in good condition. No writing or marks observed in the text. Binding is tight and square. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . After being out of print for decades, Possum Living: How to Live Well Without a Job and (Almost) No Money is being reissued with an afterword by an older and wiser Dolly Freed. In the late seventies, at the age of eighteen and with a seventh-grade education, Dolly Freed wrote Possum Livingabout the five years she and her father lived off the land on a half-acre lot outside of Philadelphia. At the time of its publication in 1978, Possum Living became an instant classic, known for its plucky narration and no-nonsense practical advice on how to quit the rat race and live frugally. In her delightful, straightforward, and irreverent style, Freed guides readers on how to buy and maintain a home, dress well, cope with the law, stay healthy, save money, and be lazy, proud, miserly, and honest, all while enjoying leisure and keeping up a middle-class fa├žade. Thirty years later, Freed's philosophy is world-renowned andPossum Living remains as fascinating, inspirational, and pertinent as it was upon its original publication. This updated edition includes new reflections, insights, and life lessons from an older and wiser Dolly Freed, whose knowledge of how to live like a possum has given her financial security and the confidence to try new ventures.

U.S. Army Survival Handbook, Department of the Army
10 Department of the Army U.S. Army Survival Handbook
The Lyons Press 2002 1585748609 / 9781585748600 Hardcover Used - Very Good
No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. No dust jacket as issued. . . . . . . . . . . . This resource is for the outdoor survivalists or future armed forces 'wannabes' of our readership. It is the standard issue handbook for the U.S. Special Operations forces and pilots. Your young survivalists will love learning how to: prevent infections in wounds, build fires, find water, make weapons and tools with minimal resources, scavenge for food, survive in various climes (desert, tropics, arctic conditions, etc.), and so much more. Lots of simple illustrations and succinct text explain the vital information on self-reliance and survival. Some of the descriptions are rather graphic (particularly in the wound treatment section), so this is not for the squeamish reader, by any means. (The thought of using maggots in an open wound to prevent infection gives me the willies, but losing a limb to gangrene is not a pleasant thought either!) It is by far one of the (if not the) most comprehensive resources we've found on outdoor survival.

Ways of the Woods: A Guide to the Skills and Spirit of the Woodland Experience, William Morehouse Harlow
11 William Morehouse Harlow Ways of the Woods: A Guide to the Skills and Spirit of the Woodland Experience
Amer Forestry Assn December 1979 0935050000 / 9780935050004 Hardcover Used - Very Good No Jacket
No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. N DJ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . As the chapter headings indicate, 'Ways of the Woods' is a storehouse of practical information and step-by-step guides aimed at helping the reader to know the forested lands of this country more intimately and enjoy them more fully. It is the story of his 50-year love affair with what the author likes to call the greenwood. It's about such activities as building shelters, orienteering, tree-felling, and organized camping, but it's also about what it FEELS like to engage in those activities and do them well. The book is at once a handy guide to woodsmanship and a look into the soul of a woodsman. It is at the same time a chronicle of modern conservation and a powerful refutation of the claim that the old woodcraft is dead.
