1 Bill Riviere; Illustrator-Jack Biggar Campers Bible RV
Main Street Books April 1984 0385170505 / 9780385170505 Soft Cover Used - Very Good
3rd Edition (1984)No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. . . . . . . . . . . . 'This is another fascinating book by Bill Riviere. True to the familiar Doubleday 'Outdoor Bible' format, Doubleday allowed author Riviere to write in his comfortable at-hand style rather than as a strictly informational collection. So, the reader gets to enjoy the personality of the well-seasoned and knowledgeable Bill Riviere in this book. This updated 1984 version is very similar to the 1960 version of 'The Camper's Bible' also written by Bill Riviera two and a half decades earlier. You can notice many of the illustrations are identical. HOWEVER, this 1984 version is about half new material; new to the '80's anyway. The late 1970'ss and early 1980's were a magical time for outdoor enthusiasts. New products and new technologies opened up the outdoors to backpacking, canoeing, and camping with lighterweight equipment and equipment made for distance hiking. These new products and new possibilities are reflected in this book. It was a fascinating time for outdoorsmen. Kids who grew up camping with Dad and Mom in canvas tents with Coleman Lanterns and stoves were leaving the cars at the trailheads and hiking the Continental Divide or the Appalatian trail or others. Now, rather than using horse pack trains, backpackers were self-sufficient carrying all they needed on their own backs for weeks at a time. This was the era of nylon free-standing tents, airplane grade aluminum framed backpacks, Vibram soled Vasque hiking boots, improved synthetic fill for sleeping bags, lightweight cook stoves from Europe. Most importantly, it was a time of a new attitude of the outdoors. This was the begining of no-trace camping. Backpackers and hikers no longer cut down trees for tent frames. It was a time of renewed interest in exploration of America's wilderness - this time as a recreation. This book is a time capsule of that transition. We see refrences to the old canvas tents and car-camping. Then, we see sections on lightweight backpacking and the new technologies that made it more possible and more comfortable. The contrast is exciting. This is a book of nostalgia, of course, but all the camping technique and information still rings true today. If you camp with retro equipment, this book is especially for you as it brings you through the descriptions and knowlegable uses of equipment from 1960 to 1984 - all still around today - all still every bit as useable as it was then.'
