13 Richard Wheeler A Rising Thunder: From Lincoln's Election to the Battles of Bull Run: An Eyewitness History
Castle Books 2007 0785817115 / 9780785817116 Hardcover Used - Very Good Very Good
No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. DJ is VG. . . . . . . .. . . . . . In this book Wheeler describes the tumultuous events that preceded and led up to the outbreak of the war, beginning before Lincoln's election. He follows the conflict of words among abolitionists, those who would preserve the Union at all costs, and the defenders of slavery and states' rights; the confused jockeying of the political parties in the months before the 1860 election to find the most suitable candidates and platforms for them to run on; and, of course, the. Efforts of the new president, Abraham Lincoln, to maneuver through the shoals of turmoil. When all efforts to avoid a final break fail, the narrative reaches a climax with the Confederate assault on Fort Sumter, followed by the first major battle at Bull Run, a blood-letting that shattered the hopes and beliefs of those on both sides who had somehow expected a quick and easy war.

A sketchbook of. . . the border wars of the Upper Ohio Valley, 1769-1794: Conflicts and Resolutions, William Hintzen
14 William Hintzen A sketchbook of. . . the border wars of the Upper Ohio Valley, 1769-1794: Conflicts and Resolutions
Precision Shooting, Incorporated April 1999 0967094801 / 9780967094809 Soft Cover Collectible - Very Good
No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. Written by a noted historian, this piece chronicles the bloody 25 years that was the winning of the Eastern Frontier, centered at Fort Henry (known today as Wheeling, West Virgina). This books brings back to you the days of... Daniel Boone... Simon Kenton... Lewis Wetzel... the Girty brothers... Sam McColloch... Betty Zane, etc. 'In a time and place where uncommon heroism and courage were commonplace...' no lover of the history of heroic men and woman will want to put this book down unfinished.. . . . . . . . . 'All history is through the filter of time but I believe Hintzen has tried to minimize the 'bias drift' as much as possible. There is so much we don't know about this period even though many have written about it. This is a well written and researched book and should be part of any collection of works dealing with the sweeping changes after the French and Indian wars. I would not call it exhaustive by any criteria because there are broader cultural issues on a global scale that are part of the dynamics but would mostly distract from this treatment of the raw and very dangerous lives of those who acted on those circumstances for their own personal motives. I believe William Hintzen has achieved a worthy document that struggles with the conflicting information that comes to us from a time of mortal conflict, illiteracy, stress, pain and transcendent endurance.' -- Steven Lohr

18 Editor-Gordon Hardy Above and Beyond: A History of the Medal of Honor from the Civil War to Vietnam
Stan Clark Military Books October 1985 0809456281 / 9780809456284 Hardcover Used - Very Good Very Good
No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. DJ is VG withone minor tear. . . . . . . . . . 'In 1985 I purchased this fascinating book about the Medal of Honor and its history and over the years I have re-read it many times because of the fascinating story and history of the brave men (and 1 woman) who was awarded America's highest medal for bravery in combat. This book begins with the story of how the medal was created during the Civil War for heroics of men who were in battle and went 'above and beyond' the call of duty for their heroics. The medal has been awarded since the Civil War to a few thousand men who either died in their actions or were awarded the medal immediately after their heroics or years later after their heroic deed. In peacetime up to the early 1930's the medal was also awarded to men who did great feats during peacetime such as Admiral Byrd, and three navy divers who rescued sailors from a submarine that sunk to the Ocean Floor. The history of the medal and men continue from World War I, World War II, the 'banana wars', Korea, and as this was published in 1985 the latest war Vietnam. There are individual stories of men and what they did to get the Medal, story of how Hollywood made movies based on heroic actions of Medal of Honor winners such as 'Sergeant York' and 'Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo'. Side stories are also told about how the men felt after receiving the Medal are told in a fascinating read. In the back of the book are the lists of the men who received the Medal of Honor and the location where they 'won' the Medal also what war they were in. This is an outstanding book with a fascinating read that is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to anyone interested in US Military History, the History of the Medal of Honor, and great stories of valor!' -- Joe Owen
