From the BACK OF DUST JACKET: From the back: Modellers looking for guidance in basic construction techniques usually have no trouble finding what they need to know in print, but detailed material on such aspects as hull forms, shipboard structures and ships' fittings are another matter. 'A Ship Modelmaker's Manual' fills the gap. Alphabetically presented in this fully illustrated coatalog, in-depth information covers anchors, bollards and fairleads, davits, derricks, funnels, hatches, lifeboats, masts, propellers and winches. Extended entries highlight common modelmaking problems including methods of propulsion, plans for ship models, hull constructions and choice of timber.

F.H. Chapman: The First Naval Architect and His Work, Daniel G. Harris

'First, this book is manufactured to a high standard; it will last a very long time. I received a copy with a clear, book jacket cover, which protects the published book cover. This book has weight due to excellent British concern for paper and binding quality. From a point of view, as if it were a work of art, the publication is handsome. Pictorial representations are good; some being rather small but that due to lack of space: a reduction of size is required and thus forgivable. Line drawings of most things to have been built in the 1600s is a lost art. Today's computer based software generate construction drawings not of art but of precision and so, lack a certain Ă©lan probably unknown even to the drafters of the vessels of the 1600s who would never know computers. The depths of appreciation include the world of mathematics peculiar to the Naval Architect also calculated automatically by modern computed aided drafting. It was done long hand. My point is, if you don't know what a vessel's righting moment is, not to worry: your eye will scan for hours about these several vessel's sweet and fair lines. If a Naval Architect, your appreciation will be long. In between? This is a fascinating read with plenty of Appendices to answer questions and define meanings. It would be a waste of genius if this book were left on the coffee table, unread, unopened, unappreciated for it's fine publication construction, it's hand drawn art and beauty, and the science still in use in ship building. Any difficulty reading this book is well worth the effort to understand and gain a knowledge of the art and science of ship building from about 1750 to 1810.' -- M. Gallegos

Looking for a Ship, John McPhee

Farrar, Straus and Giroux September 1990 0374190771 / 9780374190774 First Edition Hardcover Collectible - Very Good Very Good
Stated 1st Edition (1990). No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. From private collection. In archival mylar protected dust jacket. . . . . . . . . .This is an extraordinary tale of life on the high seas aboard one of the last American merchant ships, the S.S. Stella Lykes, on a forty-two-day journey from Charleston down the Pacific coast of South America. As the crew of the Stella Lykes makes their ocean voyage, they tell stories of other runs and other ships, tales of disaster, stupidity, greed, generosity, and courage. . . . . . . . . . ' read looking for a ship in the early 90's when it first was published. Like all John McPhee books, it allows you to experience a new world through the adventures of the author. I have recommended this book to teens who are interested in attending maritime colleges. While the book is a bit of a downer since it describes the poor state of the US flag shipping industry, it is a fascinating look at the lives of merchant seamen. I highly recommend this and in fact all books by McPhee.' -- Richard Guba

9 Editor-John Bowen Scale Model Sailing Ships
Conway Maritime Press Ltd October 1977 0851771114 / 9780851771113 Hardcover Used - Very Good Very Good
No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. From private collection. In archival mylar protected dust jacket. . . . . . . . . . . . . From the BACK OF DUST JACKET: 'A beautifully turned out model of a sailing ship is always a source of wonder and envy, but many a newcomer to this fascinating hobby will despair at ever being able to achieve suh perfection. This need not be so, for the essential techniques are straightforward and easy to acquire - and one of the easiest ways to learn is from other, more experienced ship modellers. In Scale Model Sailing Ships the experience of internationally famous modelmakers has been set for the benefit of all those aspiring to higher standards. Each contributes a chapter about his chosen field, but all concentrates on three types - the galleon, clipper, and the fore-and-aft rigged coaster - as representative of the problems and pitfalls of modelling any sailing ship, whether plank-on-frame, miniature or working. Over 100 plans and diagrams and 150 photos illustrate chapters on 'getting started', hull construction, deck fittings, masting and rigging, scenic miniatures, working models, painting and finishing, and flags. A detailed bibliography rounds off a book that must prove useful to anyone seeking to improve his modelmaking skill.'

Shipyard in Maine: Percy & Small and the Great Schooners, Ralph Linwood Snow, Douglas K. Lee; Forward-W. J. Lewis Parker
10 Ralph Linwood Snow, Douglas K. Lee; Forward-W. J. Lewis Parker Shipyard in Maine: Percy & Small and the Great Schooners
Tilbury House Publishers October 1998 088448193X / 9780884481935 First Edition Hardcover Collectible - Very Good Very Good
1st Edition / 1st Printing - Stated (February 1999) - No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Towards the end of the nineteenth century, a new firm was established in Bath, Maine, at a time when established yards in the City of Ships were turning to steel construction. Percy & Small would set unrivaled records for wooden shipbuilding and ship management, launching 22 giant five- and six-masted schooners (along with 16 four-masters) in two decades. Not just builders, Percy & Small also demonstrated an unusual knack for making money as managing owners of a large fleet of schooners, and the stories of their ships are told in these pages in wonderful detail, from the wooing of potential shareholders and the elaborate launching festivities (with one schooner stuck on the ways) to deeply laden coal schooners struggling to stay off the lee shore, daring captains navigating treacherous shoals, and the perils of collisions, dismastings, fires, and enemy submarines. At sea in a storm, a giant six-master heavy with coal needed great strength to survive. Percy & Small developed specialized shipbuilding techniques that pushed the wooden hull to its limits when the rest of the world had turned to steel construction. Doug Lees meticulously researched construction drawings add immeasurably to the technical information presented in this book. Maritime enthusiasts and modelmakers will find a wealth of information here.

The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships, C. Nepean Longridge

6th printing (1974) No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. From private collection. In archival mylar protected dust jacket - Incl;udes 6 foldout drawings. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 'The Ship-of-the-Line is a military work-of-art, the largest and most complex moving object of its age. 'The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships' reveals that this creation is the work of masters of the art, working from their creative minds, constructing scale models, and instructing their artisans in bringing that vision into reality. Each was a one-off creation, and each was an improvement of its predecessor. The book may at first seem daunting, but the deeper one delves into it the more it reveals the even more daunting task of the shipwright, and the more one can grasp the master's touch. It is probably the best preparation for anyone anticipating a visit to Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar, the HMS Victory.' -- Amazon Customer

The Model Ship: Her Role in History, Norman Napier Boyd
14 Norman Napier Boyd The Model Ship: Her Role in History
Antique Collectors Club 2000 1851493271 / 9781851493272 Hardcover Used - Very Good Very Good
No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. DJ is VG. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The theme of the book is the practical part played by the model in maritime development, arranged in roughly chronological order - from Ancient Egypts; funerary model role, to the seventeenth century's use of the model in illustrating naval design developments to such modern naval architecture aspects as tank testing, stability simulation, war-damage control and even to its use in filming naval battles (such as the television series Hornblower). A major aim is to help the reader acquire a critical eye for classifying model types and list many of the major model collections. It is not, however, a how-to-do-it model guide. While the book will explain and illustrate the undoubted aesthetic qualities of models for those interested in maritime history, it will be a particularly useful reference work for collectors, dealers and museum staff with a commercial interest in ship models.
