1 Editors-T. Okey, E. Gurney Salter, Robert Steele 'The Little Flowers' & The Life of St. Francis with the 'Mirror of Perfection' (Everyman's Library)
J.M. Dent and sons August 1912 B006VD4358 Hardcover Used - Good
2nd Printing (1912) No marks or writing observed in text. Binding lightly shaken and spine is sunned.............................. The Little Flowers and The Life of St. Francis with The Mirror of Perfection. Introduction by T. Okey. 485. Contents: The Little Flowers of St. Francis, translated by T. Okey; The Life of St. Francis, translated by Miss E. Guerney Salter; The Mirror of Perfection, translated by Robert Steele. The three works of which this volume is composed are printed in the inverse order of their composition. ' Little Flowers ' is a free translation somewhat amplified from a Latin original completed some time after 1322. The passionate fondness of St. Francis for all living things, his happiness in ministering to mankind, his fondness for animals, are told in many legends some of which are preserved in ' Little Flowers,' a collection of marvellous stories about him popular in Italy to this day. They contain much that exceeds the limits of credulity, but none can hesitate to believe and be impressed by the beautiful depth of the love which they reveal in the character of St. Francis.................... The ' Mirror of Perfection ' is believed to be a compilation edited by a member of a religious order called Porziuncula, based chiefly on the documents and memoirs left by Friar Leo, and completed about 1318. The preface states that it ' was compiled as a legend from certain ancient ones which the fellows of blessed Francis wrote and caused to be written in diverse places.' With wonderful simplicity and loving sympathy the account of the Saint's three Rules is given; the rejection of two of them by the Popes, the dissensions of the ministers, and much of St. Francis' ecclesiastical troubles due to these principles is told............. ' Life of St. Francis,' by St. Bonaventura. Of the date and authorship of this ' Life of St. Francis ' there is no question. It was written by command of the Chapter-General of Narbonne in 1260, and was intended as the definite and authoritative life to supersede the great variety of fragmentary lives then in circulation. 1997 Printing - No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. LIght wear on cover. . . . . . . . . . . . Anne de Guigne (1911-1922) began life as a difficult child - proud, bossy and strong-willed. But a profound change took place in her at age 4, and for the rest of her life the 'little tyrant' turned all the resources of her heart and will to the practice of perfect obedience. This book describes the turning point in Anne's life, her First Holy Communion at age 5, her intimate love for Our Lord, her love for her little brother and sisters, her remarkable 'motherhood' of souls, her purity, efforts in school, wonderful courtesy and beautiful death at age 10. Anne's intercession has been found to be powerful, especially on behalf of children and of 'big sinners.' In 1933 Anne's body was found to be incorrupt, and in 1990 the Church declared that Anne de Guigne had praticed Heroic Virtue, thus giving her the title of 'Venerable.' Anne is a beautiful and inspiring true story that is perfect for adults and children alike, for it tells of a 20th-century child who may someday be counted among the great Saints of the Church!

No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight but canted. Gently read. . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . Jurgis [George] Matulaitis (Polish: Jerzy Matulewicz; 13 April 1871 in the village of Lugine, near Marijampole, Lithuania, Russian Empire – 27 January 1927 in Kaunas, Lithuania) was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Vilnius from 1918 to 1925 and founder of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On 28 June 1987, Pope John Paul II beatified him as the Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis-Matulewicz. With some small success reviving the Marians, Matulaitis began reclaiming the monastery properties of the old Order. He also established Marian religious houses and houses for training new members (novitiates) at Bielany, Poland, Marijampole, Lithuania, Fribourg, Switzerland, and Chicago, Illinois. Just as it seemed the work of the Marian renewal was seeming to take root, Matulaitis heard the rumors that he was being considered for the position of bishop. He accepted the call of Pope Benedict XV to serve as the Bishop of Vilnius. Matulaitis had just founded the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lithuania, 15 October 1918. ( He also founded another Congregation, the Handmaids of Jesus in the Eucharist, in 1924, in Belarus). He was installed as Bishop of Vilnius on 8 December 1918.

Privately Printed 1983 281BNB1002982 Soft Cover Used - Very Good
No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. . . . . . . . . . . Blessed Laura Vicuña (April 5, 1891 – January 22, 1904) is a Chilean holy figure beatified as Blessed by the Roman Catholic Church. She is the patron of abuse victims. One day, remembering the phrase of Jesus: “No one has greater love than to give up one’s life for one’s friends,' Laura decided to give her life in exchange for her mother's salvation. As time passed she became seriously ill with pulmonary tuberculosis. Before she died, Laura told her mother: “Mama, I offer my life for you, I asked our Lord for this. Before I die, Mother, would I have the joy of seeing you repent?” Mercedes answered: “I swear, I will do whatever you ask me! God is the witness of my promise!' Laura smiled and said to: 'Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Mary! Goodbye, Mother! Now I die happy!' On January 22, 1904, Laura died of her disease, weakened by the physical abuse she previously received from Mora, having offered her life for the salvation of her mother. From 1937 to 1958, Laura's remains lay in the Nequén graveyard, after which they were moved to Bahía Blanca. One of her famous sayings is 'Suffer silently and Smile always' Every candidate for beatification, except in the case of martyrs, must be shown to have obtained a miracle from God when their prayers were invoked. In Laura's case, the requisite miracle concerned the nun Ofelia del Carmen Lobos Arellano. In August 1955, doctors told Sister Ofelia that she would die of lung cancer in a few months, but when she confidently invoked Laura's prayers, the disease disappeared. September 3, 1988 saw Laura's beatification by Pope John Paul II. Her feastday is celebrated on January 22. In the 2004 edition of the Roman Martyrology, Laura is listed under 22 January with the citation: 'Born in the city of Santiago, Chile, and a pupil of the Institute of Mary Help of Christians, for the conversion of her mother, she made an oblation of her life to God at the age of 13'.

Binding tight and square, text clean and free of marking and writing. Appears unread. ................ .................. ................... To celebrate the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Franciscan Order, Franciscan scholar and historian Dominic Monti tells us the beautiful and inspirational story of Francis of Assisi and his followers—the Order of Friars Minor, or the Lesser Brothers—from its beginnings to current times. This history emphasizes not only the medieval developments of the world's most beloved band of men but also the internal evolution and mission efforts of the friars during the modern period, from the sixteenth century to the present. Monti gives particular emphasis to the history of the order in the English-speaking world: first England and Ireland and then North America and the twentieth-century expansion of the order to other English-speaking countries. Chapter topics include: medieval Christian society; the First Lesser Brothers; expansion and transformation of the Order; the Franciscan mission; internal crisis in the Order; Observants and Conventuals; friars during the Reformation and Baroque Eras; mission to the world; the challenges of modernity; Franciscans in the United States, Canada and Australia; rebuilding the Order in Europe; and recovering a charism.
