1 Daniel Berrigan The Bow in the Clouds: Man's Covenant with God
Catholic Book Club 1962 B0006DAXA8 Hardcover Used - Very Good
Private library copy with very few libarary markings. No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read if at all. In archival mylar protected dust jacket. . . . . . . . 'Father Berrigan writes with rare perception and power. Firmly rooted in Christ and His mysteries, his writing is revelatory and dynamic, full of light and promise.' Commonweal One of America's most celebrated poets and theologians probes in this volume the deeper meanings of the Catholic Faith for daily life. Father Berrigan starts with the Covenant God made with men soon after the Fall and traces it to its rich fulfillment in the promises and teachings of Jesus Christ. He illustrated his theme by intense portraits of the great men of faith in both the Old and new Testaments and by reference to the teachings of the Church Fathers. In addition, Father Berrigan draws on recent European thought, showing the place of the liturgy and the apostolate in the full worship of Catholic life.

2 Dietrich von Hildebrand, John Henry Crosby My Battle Against Hitler: Faith, Truth, and Defiance in the Shadow of the Third Reich
Image November 2014 0385347510 / 9780385347518 First Edition Hardcover Collectible - Very Good Very Good
1st Edition / 1st Printing - No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . “Dietrich von Hildebrand is already well-known and respected as one of the great Catholic philosophers of the twentieth century. However, this engaging collection of his personal writings on the topic of Hitler and Nazism allows us to appreciate his wisdom and courage even more fully. His faith in God and understanding of the human person enabled him to clearly see the threat posed by his evil ideology. This memoir reveals the strength of character that von Hildebrand bravely displaced throughout his twenty-year battle against of the greatest evils of his age. Even amid significant personal danger, he never wavered in his commitment to the truth. We remember Dietrich von Hildebrand’s intellectual contributions, but let us also recall his witness to human dignity in the face of evil.” – Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York . . . . . . . . . . . “Dietrich von Hildebrand's memoirs give us an inroad into the soul of another Germany, a Germany thoroughly different from that of Adolf Hitler and of the Nazis. In the years just after the First World War, he warned against the danger of exaggerated nationalism and pleaded for the reconciliation between European nations. Later he would defend the common Christian and Jewish roots of European civilization. His example warms the hearts of all those who love freedom and are willing to defend the values of our civilization.” –Rocco Buttiglione, Italian statesman and close collaborator with St. John Paul II. . . . . . . . . . . “At this moment in history, no memoir could be more timely than Dietrich von Hildebrand’s account of how and why he risked everything to witness against the spreading evil of National Socialism. With much of today’s world silent as Christians face increasing persecution, many good men and women are asking themselves what they can do. This remarkable book will challenge and inspire them.” –Mary Ann Glendon, Learned Hand Professor of Law, Harvard University and Former US Ambassador to the Holy See. . . . . . . . . . . “There is but one man who can stand with Dietrich Bonhoeffer, both in intellectual brilliance and in bravery toward the Nazis; that man is Dietrich von Hildebrand. I am privileged to strongly recommend this important book as a superb introduction to this great hero of the faith. May it spawn a new generation of devotees and champions of his extraordinary thought and life.” –Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author of Bonhoeffer, Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy and Miracles. . . . . . . . . . . . “Dietrich von Hildebrand, unlike so many European Christians of his time, was an early and vigorous critic of National Socialism; a man of brilliant intellect and articulate pen who spoke out forcefully against Nazi hatred of the Jews; a scholar who defended the Christian understanding of society and the human person at immense personal cost. This wonderful collection of his writings acquaints us intimately with an extraordinary man of faith. It’s mandatory reading for anyone interested in a fuller understanding of a profoundly important era.” –Charles J Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Philadelphia “Dietrich von Hildebrand was brave in his public writings against the Nazis, brave in his hair-raising escape from Vienna in 1938. He was also bold and uncompromising in his convictions about responsibility, love, and liberty. This book brings the bold von Hildebrand back into our midst.' –Michael Novak, author of Writing from Left to Right . . . . . . . . . . . 'In the life of Dietrich on Hildebrand, we see how Catholic faith and sacramental life gave him insight, strength and freedom of spirit to confront the anti-Christian tides that swept through Western culture in the twentieth century. This compelling and inspiring memoir is a testimony to the integrity of a Christian who challenged the destructive force of the Third Reich, its dehumanizing political philosophy and its false vision of human life. I strongly recommend this memoir as a testimony to the transforming influence of the lay vocation at work in the world, exemplified in Dietrich von Hildebrand.' -Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, D.C.

Emotional Maturity More About Maturity / Vocational Counceling / The Particual Friendship / Remedies for the Particular Friendship, Gerald Kelly
10 Gerald Kelly Emotional Maturity More About Maturity / Vocational Counceling / The Particual Friendship / Remedies for the Particular Friendship
Review for Religious circa 1948 281BNB1002929 Soft Cover Used - Good
Reprint of 5 articles written for 'Review for Religious' by Fr. Gerald Kelly S.J. in 1946/47. No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. . . . . . . . . . Gerald A. Kelly, S.J. (1902-1964) has been called the “father of American Catholic medical ethics.”[1] “Rodney Dangerfield” might be a more fitting appellation, for despite his many important contributions to the field, Kelly is largely unappreciated today. When he is recognized, it is typically as a transitional figure, and more often than not as a foil: that is, he is made to represent the dismal state of American Catholic medical ethics, and American Catholic moral theology generally, just prior to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Kelly received his doctoral degree from the Gregorian University in Rome in 1937, writing his thesis on “The Theologians’ Concept of Venereal Pleasure.” He returned to St. Mary’s, Kansas, to teach moral theology to Jesuit scholastics at St. Mary’s College, which is where he would spend the rest of his career. In 1942 Kelly co-authored a small book aimed at college-aged students, Modern Youth and Chastity, which put his name on the map. The book was an immediate success. Over the next twenty years it would go through multiple editions, selling more than a million copies, not including those sold in the five foreign languages into which it was translated. That same year, 1942, Kelly also began a seventeen-year stint as managing editor of Review for Religious, a widely-read journal for clergy. During these years Kelly was also teaching summer courses to groups of religious and laity at a variety of Midwestern Catholic colleges and universities (Marquette, St. Louis, Creighton, Rockhurst, St. Mary’s, (Notre Dame)). Thus, to say that by the mid-1940s, Gerald Kelly was a household name may be exaggerating slightly, but not by much.

18 James Likoudis The Divine Primacy of the Bishop of Rome and Modern Eastern Orthodoxy: Letters to a Greek Orthodox on the Unity of the Church
St. Martin de Porres Lay Dominican Community January 2002 B0006S51H8 Soft Cover Collectible - Like New Signed By Author
Signed and inscribed by Author. CLEAN!! No marks. Might as well be new. Appears unread. ...................... .......................... Despite real progress made in ecumenical relations between Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, the last few years have seen an increase in bitter attacks on Papal Supremacy and Infallibility by some Eastern Orthodox (some of them former Protestants, others former Catholics). In this newly revised and much expanded work, (over 300 pages) 'The Divine Primacy of the Bishop of Rome and Modern Eastern Orthodoxy: Lettters to a Greek Orthodox on the Unity of the Church,' which includes much added material refuting the allegations and misconceptions made by a number of Eastern Orthodox polemicists and writers, James Likoudis treats in detail of Eastern Orthodox ecclesiology and replies to objections made to Catholic doctrine on the Pope's Primacy of Supremacy and Infallibility, on the Procession of the Holy Spirit, on the Filioque clause, on the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception, on Purgatory, and on the Development of Doctrine. There is also a new treatment of Hesychasm and Palamism, uncreated energies, created grace, the Christocentric nature of the Roman Primacy, and the Church as Icon of the Holy Trinity. Also included is the 1871 treatise of German Catholicism's great champion Bishop William Emmanuel von Ketteler on the 'Infallibility of the Teaching Authority of the Pope According to the Definition of the Vatican Council.' With this book the author contributes to today's Catholic-Orthodox dialog with an eloquent demonstration of the existence of a Papal Primacy of Universal Jurisdiction in the 'undivided Church of the First Millennium.'

19 John Henry Newman An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent
The Catholic Publication Society 1870 B00I5BFCIG Hardcover Used - Very Good
Recently rebound. Very tight and square binding. Pages are ared but now very secure. No marks or writing observed in text. Has one library marking on the verso of the title page. . . . . . John Henry Newman (1801-1890) was a theologian and vicar at the university church in Oxford who became a leading thinker in the Oxford Movement, which sought to return Anglicanism to its Catholic roots. Newman converted to Catholicism in 1845 and became a cardinal in 1879. He published widely during his lifetime; his work included novels, poetry and the famous hymn 'Lead, Kindly Light', but he is most esteemed for his sermons and works of religious thought. This volume, first published in 1870, is an ambitious examination of the logical processes that underpin religious faith. Newman discusses how it is possible to believe what cannot be proven empirically, and postulates that the mind has the facility to bridge the logic gap to allow for humans to believe in things that they do not fully comprehend. A lucid and masterful work which remains relevant to contemporary discussions of faith.
