8 John Henry Newman An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent
The Catholic Publication Society 1870 B00I5BFCIG Hardcover Used - Very Good
Recently rebound. Very tight and square binding. Pages are ared but now very secure. No marks or writing observed in text. Has one library marking on the verso of the title page. . . . . . John Henry Newman (1801-1890) was a theologian and vicar at the university church in Oxford who became a leading thinker in the Oxford Movement, which sought to return Anglicanism to its Catholic roots. Newman converted to Catholicism in 1845 and became a cardinal in 1879. He published widely during his lifetime; his work included novels, poetry and the famous hymn 'Lead, Kindly Light', but he is most esteemed for his sermons and works of religious thought. This volume, first published in 1870, is an ambitious examination of the logical processes that underpin religious faith. Newman discusses how it is possible to believe what cannot be proven empirically, and postulates that the mind has the facility to bridge the logic gap to allow for humans to believe in things that they do not fully comprehend. A lucid and masterful work which remains relevant to contemporary discussions of faith.

14 Carolinne White Confessions of St. Augustine (Abridged)
Eerdmans Pub Co September 2001 0802839282 / 9780802839282 Hardcover Used - Very Good Very Good
No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Augustine was one of the most remarkable figures of the early Christian church. Born in North Africa in A.D. 354, the son of a pagan farmer, he rose to become Bishop of Hippo and a hugely influential Christian writer, whose Confessions are still loved today for their humanity and spiritual depth. In this gorgeously illustrated volume Oxford scholar Carolinne White presents fresh translations of choice passages from the Confessions. These extracts have been chosen to express Augustine's wisdom and his mystical yearning for God. Lively narrative and colorful anecdotes are interspersed with passages of great poetry in praise of God. In the process of describing his own failings, Augustine also gives relevant advice on how to live a Christian life. In this first modern illustrated edition of the Confessions, Augustine's words are accompanied by beautiful medieval and Renaissance illuminations from manuscripts in the collection at the British Library—making this a volume to treasure for a lifetime.

Emotional Maturity More About Maturity / Vocational Counceling / The Particual Friendship / Remedies for the Particular Friendship, Gerald Kelly
16 Gerald Kelly Emotional Maturity More About Maturity / Vocational Counceling / The Particual Friendship / Remedies for the Particular Friendship
Review for Religious circa 1948 281BNB1002929 Soft Cover Used - Good
Reprint of 5 articles written for 'Review for Religious' by Fr. Gerald Kelly S.J. in 1946/47. No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. . . . . . . . . . Gerald A. Kelly, S.J. (1902-1964) has been called the “father of American Catholic medical ethics.”[1] “Rodney Dangerfield” might be a more fitting appellation, for despite his many important contributions to the field, Kelly is largely unappreciated today. When he is recognized, it is typically as a transitional figure, and more often than not as a foil: that is, he is made to represent the dismal state of American Catholic medical ethics, and American Catholic moral theology generally, just prior to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Kelly received his doctoral degree from the Gregorian University in Rome in 1937, writing his thesis on “The Theologians’ Concept of Venereal Pleasure.” He returned to St. Mary’s, Kansas, to teach moral theology to Jesuit scholastics at St. Mary’s College, which is where he would spend the rest of his career. In 1942 Kelly co-authored a small book aimed at college-aged students, Modern Youth and Chastity, which put his name on the map. The book was an immediate success. Over the next twenty years it would go through multiple editions, selling more than a million copies, not including those sold in the five foreign languages into which it was translated. That same year, 1942, Kelly also began a seventeen-year stint as managing editor of Review for Religious, a widely-read journal for clergy. During these years Kelly was also teaching summer courses to groups of religious and laity at a variety of Midwestern Catholic colleges and universities (Marquette, St. Louis, Creighton, Rockhurst, St. Mary’s, (Notre Dame)). Thus, to say that by the mid-1940s, Gerald Kelly was a household name may be exaggerating slightly, but not by much.

17 Kathleen L. Riley Fulton J. Sheen: An American Catholic Response to the Twentieth Century
Alba House November 2003 0818909153 / 9780818909153 Soft Cover Used - Very Good
No marks or writing observed in text. Minor staining on cover and number on back cover. Binding tight and square. Gently read. . . . . . . . . . . . . . On Sept. 9, 2002, the cause for the canonization of Fulton J. Sheen was begun. From his ordination in 1919 to his death in 1979 Sheen spent his life working out a 'Christian response to the challenge of the times.' As Thomistic philosopher and professor at the Catholic University of America, prolific writer, pioneer of the electronic gospel on radio and TV, convert-maker, head of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and Bishop of Rochester in the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council, he lived in the religious spotlight for most of his life. His personal odyssey mirrored that of the Catholic Church in facing the challenges of the times. 'The greatest preacher and evangelist of the 20th century in the United States,' as John Cardinal O'Connor called him, Sheen may one day enjoy the additional distinction of being the first American-born male saint.

18 Peter Kreeft Fundamentals of the Faith: Essays in Christian Apologetics
Ignatius Press 1988 B00157WQI6 Hardcover Used - Like New As New
CLEAN!! No marks. Might as well be new. Appears unread. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1. Creed : fundamentals of Christian faith. Fundamentals of Christian apologetics -- Fundamentals of Christian theology -- 2. Code : fundamentals of Christian living. Christian virtues : The three theological virtues : Faith ; Hope ; Love -- Fundamentals of Christian spirituality : The Lord's prayer -- 3. Cult : fundamentals of Christian community. The church -- The churches : Protestant and Catholic. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 'Although I am a Protestant, I have come to appreciate every thing Peter Kreeft writes. I bought his Handbook of Apologetics and could not put it down. Now these essays are feeding both mind a soul. Kreeft's way with words must be inspiration. His idea that faith, hope and charity together are the tripod that holds Christianity together is wonderful. In just one paragrpah he shows how you can't have one without the other two. Together they keep Christianity from becoming cold, cruel and wishful thinking. Each chapter is short and every word wothy of thought. My copy of the book is well marked and each page written on. Just one example of Kreeft's powerful imagery is his picture of Christianity as a flower: Faith is the root, hope the stem, and charity the flower. 'The flower is the fairest, the stem does the growing, but the root must come first' (p.170) I expect to return to this book time and again. For anyone who wants to know what Christians believe (including Christians), this is essential reading. The last section on the unity of the Church in which Kreeft lists the things both Protestants and Catholics would have to surrender to become one again is worth the price of the book. Kreeft calls his vision of a united Church 'The Evangelical Catholic Church' and perhaps his ideas could serve as a starting point for meaningful conversation. I also enjoy his list of questions concerning orthodoxy that can unify all Christians.' -- dgs

19 Louis Marie De Montfort, God Alone: The Collected Writings of St. Louis Marie De Montfort
Montfort Publications October 1995 0910984557 / 9780910984553 Soft Cover Used - Good Very Good
Marks and writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. DJ is VGGilt edges. ............... ..................... ...................... The writings of St. Louis Marie de Montfort are of great interest today for many reasons. First, because they are centered on Christ, Eternal and Incarnate Wisdom. Second, because they focus attention on the importance of Mary's role in the Mystery of Christ and of the Church-a subject of renewed interest both within the Catholic Church and other Christian churches. Third, because they embody a form of 'Marian Spirituality' that goes far beyond mere Marian devotion, as Pope John Paul II pointed out in his Marian Year encyclical: St. Louis Marie de Montfort 'proposes consecration to Christ through the hands of Mary, as an effective means for Christians to live faithfully their baptismal commitments.' Fourth, because they reflect the thinking and pastoral experiences of a man of vision whose writings have a definite prophetic ring relative to the latter times. They likewise reflect his unusually profound understanding of the Scriptures concerning Christ, Eternal and Incarnate Wisdom, as well as his own personal discovery of Mary, the 'easy, short, perfect and sure way' to obtain full possession of Divine Wisdom in our souls. In a sense, we can say that his writings have revolutionized the whole concept of true devotion to Mary by presenting it as a way of life... This is the softcover edition. The hardcover is now out of print.
