9 Abd-El-Masih Istafanous Calvin's Doctrine of Biblical Authority:
Wipf & Stock Pub September 2010 1608996441 / 9781608996445 Trade Paperback Used - Very Good
Previous owner's name and green mark on inside front cover. No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Appears unread. . . . . . . . . . . . . Calvin's Doctrine of Biblical Authority offers a profound new approach to a long-debated topic. Istafanous draws upon Calvin's twofold structure regarding salvation to illumine the Reformer's twofold knowledge of God with particular focus on biblical authority. In doing so, Istafanous presents Calvin's view of biblical authority framed within modern discussions of inspiration. In the 1539 edition of the Institutes, and in all subsequent editions, John Calvin presented justification and sanctification as the ''twofold grace of God.'' He repeatedly taught this concept in all of his commentaries, sermons, and other writings. More than any other reformer, Calvin used the ''twofold grace'' to express the full relationship between justification and sanctification. In the definitive edition of the Institutes (1559), Calvin introduced the concept of the ''twofold knowledge of God.'' This framework has been considered by many as the ordering principle of the Institutes and all of Calvin's theology. Istafanous argues that the ''twofold Grace'' inspired Calvin to introduce the concept of the ''twofold knowledge'' in 1559. Thus, the ''twofold grace of God'' provides the key to understanding the ''twofold knowledge'' specifically and Calvin's theology generally. ''This is a book not only for scholars and theologians, however, but for all preachers and teachers of the Gospel who have missionary and pastoral tasks to fulfill. I believe it will have a particularly valuable contribution to make to the church today in the West as well as in the East, for it directs us straight back to the authority of the word of God himself as it sounds to us through the Bible.'' --from the foreword by Thomas F. Torrance ''This important book offers helpful and clear exposition of John Calvin's doctrine of biblical authority in The Institutes of the Christian Religion. Drawing on insights from the Reformer's understanding of the twofold grace of God, Istafanous explicates the depth logic of Calvin's thought regarding biblical authority. Scholars, pastors, and students alike will benefit from Istafanous's significant contribution to Calvin scholarship.'' --Darren Kennedy Professor of Theology Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo Abd-el-Masih Istafanous is Professor of Theology at Evangelical Theological Seminary, Cairo, Egypt. He is the author of many books in Arabic and many articles in Arabic and English.

16 Frank Schaeffer Crazy for God: How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back
Carroll & Graf October 2007 0786718919 / 9780786718917 First Edition Hardcover Collectible - Very Good As New
1st Edition / 1st Printing - Previous owner's name and green mark on inside front cover. No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. DJ is like new. ................. .................... .................. TOC: 417 pages, [16] pages of plates : illustrations ; 22 cm Contents: Prologue -- Childhood -- Education -- Turmoil -- Peace -- Epilogue. . ....................... ....................... ............................ Frank Schaeffer grew up in Switzerland's L'Abri, an idealistic community founded by his parents, the American evangelicals Francis and Edith Schaeffer. By the time he was 19, his parents had achieved global fame as best-selling authors and speakers, l'Abri had become a mecca for spiritual seekers worldwide — from Barbara Bush to Timothy Leary — and Frank had joined his father on the evangelical circuit. By the age of 23, he had directed two multi-part religious documentaries and had helped instigate the marriage between the American evangelical community and the anti-abortion movement. But as he spoke before thousands in arenas around America, published his own evangelical bestseller, and worked with such figures as Pat Robertson, Jack Kemp, Jerry Falwell, and Dr. James Dobson, Schaeffer felt alienated, precipitating his own crisis of faith and eventually resulting in his departure. Schaeffer has since become a successful secular author. He was reduced to stealing pork chops from the grocery store in LA, rather than take on any more high-paying evangelical speaking gigs. With its up-close portraits of the leading figures of the American evangelical movement, Crazy for God is a uniquely revealing and powerful memoir, which tells its story with empathy, humor, and bite.

18 JOHN PIPER Dont Waste Your Life
Good News Pub May 2003 1581344988 / 9781581344981 Trade Paperback Used - Very Good
Previous owner's name and green mark on inside front cover. No apparent marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Appears unread. .................. ......................... ....................... TOC: 191 pages ; 22 cm Contents: My search for a single passion to live by -- Breakthrough : the beauty of Christ, my joy -- Boasting only in the cross, the blazing center of the glory of God -- Magnifying Christ through pain and death -- Risk is right : better to lose your life than to waste it -- The goal of life : gladly making others glad in God -- Living to prove He is more precious than life -- Making much of Christ from 8 to 5 -- The majesty of Christ in missions and mercy : a plea to this generation -- My prayer : let none say in the end, 'I've wasted it.' .................. ................... .................... John Piper writes, 'I will tell you what a tragedy is. I will show you how to waste your life. Consider this story from the February 1998 Reader's Digest: A couple 'took early retirement from their jobs in the Northeast five years ago when he was 59 and she was 51. Now they live in Punta Gorda, Florida, where they cruise on their 30-foot trawler, play softball and collect shells. . . .' Picture them before Christ at the great day of judgment: 'Look, Lord. See my shells.' That is a tragedy. 'God created us to live with a single passion to joyfully display his supreme excellence in all the spheres of life. The wasted life is the life without this passion. God calls us to pray and think and dream and plan and work not to be made much of, but to make much of him in every part of our lives.' Most people slip by in life without a passion for God, spending their lives on trivial diversions, living for comfort and pleasure, and perhaps trying to avoid sin. This book will warn you not to get caught up in a life that counts for nothing. It will challenge you to live and die boasting in the cross of Christ and making the glory of God your singular passion. If you believe that to live is Christ and to die is gain, read this book, learn to live for Christ, and don't waste your life!

Faith and Act - The Survival of Medieval Ceremonies in the Lutheran Reformation, Ernst Walter Zeedon; Translator-Kevin G. Walker
20 Ernst Walter Zeedon; Translator-Kevin G. Walker Faith and Act - The Survival of Medieval Ceremonies in the Lutheran Reformation
Concordia Publishing House April 2012 0758627017 / 9780758627018 Trade Paperback Used - Very Good
Previous owner's name and green mark on inside front cover. No apparent marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. . . . . . . . . . . The Reformation did not happen overnight, not with the singular act of posting of the Ninety-Five Theses, or even the presentation of the Augsburg Confession. Prof. Dr. Zeeden s classic study of how medieval church practices continued and developed within Lutheran church orders offers readers a unique perspective on how faith influences the act of worship. Historians of liturgy and theology will discover insights and important continuity between the Lutheran churches of the sixteenth century and their forbearers of the late medieval period. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Historians of liturgy and church discipline will welcome the re-appearance of Zeeden s classic monograph, gracefully translated and with updated bibliographical references. Ralph Keen, University of Illinois at Chicago . . . . . . . . . .. Kevin Walker s translation of Faith and Act represents a necessary addition to contemporary scholarship on how liturgical practices shaped the lived religion of the Reformation churches . . . and delightfully unsettles easy generalizations about the transition from medieval to early modern Christianity. Phillip Haberkern, Boston University. . . . . . . . . .. Liturgical scholars as well as pastors will find this volume to be a useful guide to understanding the evangelical reception and appropriation of the catholic legacy of liturgical forms and practices in light of the immediate background of the medieval church. John T. Pless, Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN. . . . . . . . . .. One of the most important works of German research from the past half century concerning the history of the Reformation and its ramifications. . . . It is to be highly welcomed that now after half a century this groundbreaking study for research is being translated into English. Anton Schindling, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen
