5th Printing (1968) No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. Private owners shelf number taped to spine. . . . . . . . . . . . 'To explain the development of Orthodox Spirituality we are taken by the hand to be introduced to Saints Augustine, Basil, John Chrysostom, John of the Ladder (Climicus), and Nil of Sorsk. Asceticism of the Desert is a strong tradition of the Church Catholic. The 4th century Edict of Milan had an enormous impact on the spiritual life, no longer criminalizing Christianity in the Roman Empire. The seeping in of political intervention forced many Christians to go into the desert (Jerome). We cannot know the treasures of our Church without Ambrose, Augustine, Basil, Gregory of Nazianzen, Gregory of Nyssa, Jerome and Cyril of Alexandria. These are bishops, deacons, abbas and ammas, inspired by the Holy Spirit, which the Church recognizes as the foundations of the faith, interpreting the Revelation and Tradition as society developed. 'Worship him who we see hung on the cross because of you, even if you are hanging there yourself', with these words St. Gregory of Nazianzen is teaching us that Good Friday is followed by Easter Sunday. And there is no Easter Sunday without Good Friday. There is no choosing one over the other. Most recent edition of this book is from 1986, originally published in 1945, during the last weeks of war. After 65 years the book is still of interest in our current world. We are celebrating the Year of Faith as a call to overview the II Ecumenical Council of the Vatican, as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Blessed Juan XXIII's proclamation. All of the subjects in this book were thoroughly discussed in the sessions. Blessed John Paul II, a council father, reminds us that as two lungs, so the Church is Eastern and Western (Jesus of Nazareth was born in Asia). A Monk of the Eastern Church was revealed as Fr. Lev Gillet (1893 - 1980), only after his falling asleep in the Lord. First ordained as a priest in the Roman Rite, he was received by the Eastern Orthodox in 1928. His greatest virtue was to bring the East and West closer through his many books all written in French. Personally I was introduced to his work to understand the Prayer of the Heart when studying Spiritual Theology. This book is not a treatise, rather an invitation for the reader to delve into the riches of our Christian faith, as a guidebook. A Monk of the Eastern Church reminds us that the Church is Universal. Blessed Juan XXIII when convoking the Ecumenical Council believed it would last for one session or two at the most. The bishops and advisors brought forth nothing new, rather what they had been perceiving in the Church for over a century, including two world wars. The world had changed yet the love of God -Father, Son and Holy Spirit - for his people never changes!' -- theHarrietAnn
