3 Lerone Bennett Before the Mayflower: A History of Black America
Johnson Publishing Co. 1969 B000J2K74I Hardcover Used - Good No Jacket
4th Edition (1969) Library bound hardback - Ex-library with usual marks. No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. . . . . . . . . .. 'Regardless of Mr. Bennett's apparent biases, and sometimes lofty criticisms of white America, this book is a remarkable read. When writing about such an emotional and intense subject, I believe it is impossible to be completely objective, especially when the topic involves the oppression and suppression of your own people. That being said, the author does a good job of remaining as objective as possible throughout the bulk of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the history of black America.' -- Samuel Benjamin

12 J. C. Furnas Goodbye to Uncle Tom
William Sloane Associates 1956 B0006AUIEM Hardcover Used - Very Good No Jacket
Some underlining observed in text. Binding tight and square. No DJ. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 'Goodbye to Uncle Tom_ is a nonfiction look at how American views of black people and slavery were shaped by _Uncle Tom's Cabin_---both the book itself, and the endless, increasingly low-rent plays derived from it. At one time 'Tom-shows' were a large subset of the theater industry, since even the most pious folk could find very little to object to in going to one. They were a national institution until after World War One, and were only finally killed off by movies. It's an interesting look at a little-known part of US social history, and I wish it were being re-printed.' -- Eric Oppenon

Binding tight and square. ............. .................... .North Buxton is a rural community located in Southwestern Ontario. It was established in 1849 as a community for and by former African-American slaves who escaped to Canada to gain freedom. Rev. William King, a Scots-Irish/American Presbyterian minister and abolitionist, had organized the Elgin Association to buy 9,000 acres of land for resettlement of the refugees, to give them a start in Canada. Within a few years, numerous families were living here, having cleared land, built houses, and developed crops. They established schools and churches, and were thriving before the American Civil War. Buxton now has a population of over 400 people.
