7 Abd-El-Masih Istafanous Calvin's Doctrine of Biblical Authority:
Wipf & Stock Pub September 2010 1608996441 / 9781608996445 Trade Paperback Used - Very Good
Previous owner's name and green mark on inside front cover. No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Appears unread. . . . . . . . . . . . . Calvin's Doctrine of Biblical Authority offers a profound new approach to a long-debated topic. Istafanous draws upon Calvin's twofold structure regarding salvation to illumine the Reformer's twofold knowledge of God with particular focus on biblical authority. In doing so, Istafanous presents Calvin's view of biblical authority framed within modern discussions of inspiration. In the 1539 edition of the Institutes, and in all subsequent editions, John Calvin presented justification and sanctification as the ''twofold grace of God.'' He repeatedly taught this concept in all of his commentaries, sermons, and other writings. More than any other reformer, Calvin used the ''twofold grace'' to express the full relationship between justification and sanctification. In the definitive edition of the Institutes (1559), Calvin introduced the concept of the ''twofold knowledge of God.'' This framework has been considered by many as the ordering principle of the Institutes and all of Calvin's theology. Istafanous argues that the ''twofold Grace'' inspired Calvin to introduce the concept of the ''twofold knowledge'' in 1559. Thus, the ''twofold grace of God'' provides the key to understanding the ''twofold knowledge'' specifically and Calvin's theology generally. ''This is a book not only for scholars and theologians, however, but for all preachers and teachers of the Gospel who have missionary and pastoral tasks to fulfill. I believe it will have a particularly valuable contribution to make to the church today in the West as well as in the East, for it directs us straight back to the authority of the word of God himself as it sounds to us through the Bible.'' --from the foreword by Thomas F. Torrance ''This important book offers helpful and clear exposition of John Calvin's doctrine of biblical authority in The Institutes of the Christian Religion. Drawing on insights from the Reformer's understanding of the twofold grace of God, Istafanous explicates the depth logic of Calvin's thought regarding biblical authority. Scholars, pastors, and students alike will benefit from Istafanous's significant contribution to Calvin scholarship.'' --Darren Kennedy Professor of Theology Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo Abd-el-Masih Istafanous is Professor of Theology at Evangelical Theological Seminary, Cairo, Egypt. He is the author of many books in Arabic and many articles in Arabic and English.

Faith and Act - The Survival of Medieval Ceremonies in the Lutheran Reformation, Ernst Walter Zeedon; Translator-Kevin G. Walker
16 Ernst Walter Zeedon; Translator-Kevin G. Walker Faith and Act - The Survival of Medieval Ceremonies in the Lutheran Reformation
Concordia Publishing House April 2012 0758627017 / 9780758627018 Trade Paperback Used - Very Good
Previous owner's name and green mark on inside front cover. No apparent marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. . . . . . . . . . . The Reformation did not happen overnight, not with the singular act of posting of the Ninety-Five Theses, or even the presentation of the Augsburg Confession. Prof. Dr. Zeeden s classic study of how medieval church practices continued and developed within Lutheran church orders offers readers a unique perspective on how faith influences the act of worship. Historians of liturgy and theology will discover insights and important continuity between the Lutheran churches of the sixteenth century and their forbearers of the late medieval period. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Historians of liturgy and church discipline will welcome the re-appearance of Zeeden s classic monograph, gracefully translated and with updated bibliographical references. Ralph Keen, University of Illinois at Chicago . . . . . . . . . .. Kevin Walker s translation of Faith and Act represents a necessary addition to contemporary scholarship on how liturgical practices shaped the lived religion of the Reformation churches . . . and delightfully unsettles easy generalizations about the transition from medieval to early modern Christianity. Phillip Haberkern, Boston University. . . . . . . . . .. Liturgical scholars as well as pastors will find this volume to be a useful guide to understanding the evangelical reception and appropriation of the catholic legacy of liturgical forms and practices in light of the immediate background of the medieval church. John T. Pless, Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN. . . . . . . . . .. One of the most important works of German research from the past half century concerning the history of the Reformation and its ramifications. . . . It is to be highly welcomed that now after half a century this groundbreaking study for research is being translated into English. Anton Schindling, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen

19 A. Chadwick Mauldin Fullerism as Opposed to Calvinism: A Historical and Theological Comparison of the Missiology of Andrew Fuller and John Calvin
Wipf & Stock Pub December 2010 1608998320 / 9781608998326 Trade Paperback Used - Very Good
Previous owner's name and green mark on inside front cover. No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. ............... .............................. ............................. TOC: xiv, 115 pages ; 23 cm Contents: Preliminary issues -- Historical survey -- Doctrinal study of John Calvin -- Doctrinal study of Andrew Fuller -- Conclusion. . ........................ ................................ ..................... Calvinism and its impact upon Baptist and other free-church traditions is an issue of perennial importance. Indeed, much ink has been employed throughout the years for the purpose of considering just this topic. Obviously Calvinism is a complete doctrinal system, and it bears upon many other areas of theological concern beyond the doctrine of salvation. While many Baptists have had a long and historic association with Calvinistic soteriology, Calvinism's approach to ecclesiology and missiology should leave most self conscious Baptists dissatisfied at best. This book provides a missiological comparison of Fullerism and Calvinism. Andrew Fuller or Fullerism (while admittedly a form of Calvinism) is shown in this book to be an exciting and vibrant alternative to historic Reformed theology-particularly for Baptists and other free-church traditions. Fuller made a tremendous theological contribution in his day; through his writings he established the doctrinal rationale for indiscriminate gospel proclamation (a concept that was heavily under attack in eighteenth-century Baptist life). Consequently, this book hopes to encourage its readers to contemplate the lack of precision in the term Calvinism when used as a Baptistic nomenclature and to promote Fullerism (with its acute missiological emphasis) as a more helpful theological descriptor for the Baptist.
